These past weeks have been a whirlwind of emotions. My family and I went through the waves of denial as we assumed this would pass quickly and life would just go back to normal. As we enter into another week of quarantine, we have settled into a routine of homeschool and much loved family time, but have also dealt with a strange sense of grief as we see our 6 year old missing his friends and going to church as well as stressing about our own future and the future of family and friends and our communities as a whole. I have been brainstorming ways I could reach out to my community during this time using my craft. I came across an Instagram post from a fellow photographer, KC Lostetter, (she was inspired by another photographer who actually started the movement, Cara Soulia) of a family on the front steps of their house... it was called the front steps project. I’m so excited to bring this project home to my own community here in Southern California.
What is the Front Steps Project?
Cara Soulia’s motivation for starting this project is stated so well in her quote, “The purpose of this project is to bring us together when we might feel isolated. I aim to highlight the faces of our community during a time when we might not see them in passing at the grocery store, coffeeshop, on the train or at the gym. Participating in this project is also an opportunity to step up to help those who need it most right now…”
We’re all in this together. If you’re lonely, I’m hoping this can be a small way to bring our community together, but also a way to capture the good moments we can find through this crazy time in history. Moments where we’ve been able to spend a little extra time with the ones we love and reflect on what’s most important in life.
How Does This Work?
I will meet you at your front steps. You just need to bring yourself, your family, your pets, or your roommates out your front door for a bit of fresh air for about 5 minutes. I will be following the current safety guidelines and the resulting photographs (probably 1 or 2) will be my gift to you.
In return, I’m asking for permission to share your images. Please also consider other ways you can give back to our community.
